As I've mentioned before ... I usually do two things when we are surprised with a day off of school.
I bake and watch movies ... usually simultaneously.
Last Thursday and Friday being snowed in, I decided to make 2 two different kinds of rolls.
Day One
I made a new sticky bun recipe I had never tried before. Tony really wanted me to make my old stand-by cinnamon roll recipe, but I wanted to experiment a bit. You never know when you'll find a better recipe!
Tony said that on a scale of 1 to 10, these were a 4. Hence, I will not be posting that recipe!
(Whew! Tough judge! Glad I passed his test! ;->)
Day Two
I made some fantastic Gruyere-Stuffed Crusted Loaves. I've made these several times over the last couple of years and they never fail to please. Here's the recipe from from the King Arthur Flour's web site.

That cheese just melts down the side ..... mm ... mm ... mmmm!
They also give step-by-step photo instructions, if you are so inclined to make these yummy rolls of goodness. The recipe is really pretty easy ... Just be warned that you must make a starter the night before, so it really takes 2 days to make this.
We need to go back to school, or they'll be rolling me out the door!!!!!
Roll out the barrel,
We'll have a barrel of fun ...
Who ... Who ... Whooooo!
Pardon me ... The Polish Polka Girl sometimes emerges when she hears a good polka!

You just couldn't wait until we had another snow day, could you?!!! You just went ahead without me, didn't you! I'm hurt, so hurt! See, that's why they didn't turn out good, 'cause I wasn't there to lick the cinnamon and sugar off my fingers! LOL
The cheese rolls look divine! I can see why you didn't do step-by-step photos. You were in too big a hurry to eat them! Yummy!
WOW yum!!! your Polish? how awesome is that...im just a white chick with no heritage haha! I am really excited about any recipe from king arthurs flour, they always do such a good job with their products!!
Hahahahahahhahaha!!!
I'm so sorry, Dearest Susan. I apologize for not having you over to help me with the cinnamon rolls!
Next time, for sure, I'll give you call!!!!
They turned out OK, but the other recipe I make is much better ... so Tony said the old stand-bys are a 10 and these ... were .... a ....4. (Funny, though, he ate them anyway!)
Since KAF already had a step-by-step photo display of the Gruyere rolls, I thought I'd lay off of the photos ... and you're right ... The quicker it's made, the quicker to eat!
Dearest Jana,
I'm one half Polish, and some Irish. I wish I paid attention more when I was growing up and learn a bit more of the language.
You are a TALENTED white chick, Jana!!! That's what distinguishes you, my dear!
Yes, KAF is a great company ... I love to get their catalog and dream away!!!
Forgot to mention that I follow KAF's Baker's Banter blog and I always use their flour. I really do think it makes a difference in my baking. I need to order the catalog! I love to dream about kitchen stuff and cooking supplies! :)
Dearest Susan,
I only use their flour, too and like you iI think it does make a difference!
You have to get the catalog! Lots of lovely things to dream about!
ohhhhhh mmyyyyyyy goooooddddd. That is god, not good. But they look gooooood too. The Gruyere ones are killing me right now, killing me I say.
I might just have to check out the instructions for Don's next snow day - - HA!
You made me laugh out loud, Dearest Ruth! I bet that you would LOVE those rolls!
The reason that I made them is that my sister had just made them a couple of days before, and we went on and on ... and on ... about how good these loaves are. They freeze great too ... so I usually make a double batch and freeze whatever we don't eat that day. You can make them with whatever cheese you like, but the Gruyere seems to hit the spot!
Come on snow day!!!
Since I'm dieting *sigh* I can only enjoy these vicariously! They LOOK awesome! Glad I can't smell them right now! Yum yum.
Oh, my goodness. The photos are making my mouth water. Beautiful! All I need is the aroma and I'd keel over.
My husband would love for me to make the Gruyere-stuffed crusted loaves. Oh, my!
Hey, LBDD,
Stick to your guns ... (I should have put a block on this post for you!!!)
Vicariously is good!!! Virtual calories, nonexistent grams of fat! Perfect!
Dear Bella,
Thank you! They are pretty good ... (Don't tell LBDD i said that! ;->)
I apologize if I put you on the spot with baking these ... but like I said ... Shhhh ... they are pretty good!!!!
Creative, delicious.
I added you to the poets' list,
if you wish to participate, please post a poem for comments.
thank you.
Let me know if you want to stay out.
Dearest jingle,
I'll give it a try!!!
Thank you!
Wow, Those rolls look so good. :-)
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the visit! I wish I could take credit for the recipe ... comes from King Arthur Flour ... but they are really tasty!
CottageGirl, King Arthur Flour needs to substitute your pictures for their Gruyere Cheese Rolls! I want one of these right now!
Dearest Cora,
Thanks to you, Cora!! It is fun to take pictures, isn't it?
If you lived close, I'd take some of those rolls to you right now!
